SINGLE LEG AMPUTEE SPORTS CLUB

As its name suggests, SLASC is an organization dedicated to rehabilitation and inspiration for the victims of some of the Sierra Leonean civil war’s most unimaginable atrocities.  Amputation was a hallmark of the RUF’s [Revolutionary United Front – the warring rebel faction of the civil war] campaign of terror; their practice of hacking off hands and legs left many young people not only physically handicapped, but gripped by fear and depression.  A large population continues to inhabit amputee camps, where they are isolated from loved ones because of their struggle to come to terms with their physical and emotional limitations.  The teams that form the football league are all made up of breathtaking athletes who – unbelievably – have managed to revitalize their skill, speed, agility, and competitive drive in spite of their disabilities.

In November of 2007, SLASC will compete in the World Amputee Football Cup in Turkey, thanks largely to the support of the United Nations and FIFA.  Pinebox Theatre’s current production of The Most Liquid Currency in the World is lending their support as well, by donating 5% of their ticket sales to the organization.  In addition to lending financial support, Hooverville has partnered with SLASC to help provide socceer balls and other sports equipment, and to assist members of the organization in distributing materials throughout the remote villages in Sierra Leone, where young people can be exposed – not just to the game itself – but to the empowering instruction of  the organization’s atheletes.
